Viral Reddit Post: A video showing almost empty streets in Mumbai during the Diwali holidays is going viral, sparking lively discussions online about what really causes the city’s traffic jams. The clip was shared on Reddit by u/Stunning_Shape9199 on the subreddit r/mumbai. It shows a resident driving through streets that are normally packed with vehicles, moving freely without the usual chaos. The Redditor wrote, “I just experienced something I never thought I’d see, empty roads in Mumbai. Completely empty.”
He explained that his usual 17-kilometre commute, which often takes over an hour, took only 25 minutes this time. “Nothing changed except the number of people... Since it’s Diwali, most of the city’s migrant population has gone back to their hometowns, and the effect is crazy. You can literally feel the city breathe again...Mumbai’s problem isn’t design. It’s density,” he added.

The video highlights how the city transforms when a significant number of people leave temporarily. For a few days during Diwali, the streets become quieter, commutes are faster, and the air feels cleaner. While the debate continues about the root causes of Mumbai’s traffic, the clip serves as a rare reminder of how density shapes life in one of India’s busiest cities.
Many users shared similar experiences. One commented, “I managed to reach Juhu in 25 minutes from Kandivali!” Another pointed out, “The first thing I noticed in the video is the clear blue skies, not the traffic, the rain yesterday healed Mumbai, you love to see it!”

"As I have previously mentioned, and I reiterate, people are reluctant to welcome migrants into their cities, yet they expect these migrants to contribute taxes to the states and perform all the arduous labour. Who would fulfil these roles? The same tasks would incur double the cost in their absence," a second user wrote. "It is the migrants who flock to mumbai for the vibes orrr it could be that people aren't travelling on the roads since it's Diwali!" added another user.
