Jhansi Viral Video: In Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, people are struggling with long and daily power cuts in the middle of a terrible heatwave. With no electricity at home and no place to escape the heat, some families have found shelter in an unusual place, an ATM. A video going viral on social media shows a woman named Jayanti Kushwaha and her three sons, aged 10, 14, and 16, resting inside an ATM to stay cool. “We are over here because, at least, there is electricity here. Where shall we go? We aren’t getting electricity at night or in the morning hours. So I, along with my whole family, am resting here to get some respite from the heat,” Jayanti said.

She also shared that the issue has been going on for over a month. “No one from the electricity department came to tell us about the exact situation. So we are here at the ATM. We shall not sleep with the kids on the streets; that is why we are living in an ATM with the kids,” she added. Online, too, people are showing their anger. Many users blamed the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL). Others talked about how heatstroke is killing poor people and animals, and how urgent the situation has become.

These power cuts have pushed many others to protest. Angry residents, tired of living without power, sat on the roads and held a dharna, asking for quick action from the electricity department.

On May 18, Congress leader and former Union minister Pradeep Jain joined the protest with party workers. They surrounded the office of the chief engineer, Mohd Saghir, for nearly seven hours. Saghir said the problem was due to a heavy load and promised that the power supply would be fixed soon.

"Central govt is giving a lot of funds to UP, but even basic amenities are also not provided?" added a second user.

"Don't know if this is true (seems true), but the power supply situation in Jhansi is really very grim. Even the ruling party MLA is admitting this," added a third user. "In this case, it looks like poor people have taken shelter in the AC room of ATMs in this heatwave," added another user.
