Delhi was all set to welcome football legend Lionel Messi for the final leg of his GOAT India tour, but the city’s dense smog turned his arrival into a hazy, meme-worthy moment. On Monday, visibility dropped to almost zero in many areas, traffic crawled, and the India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for fog as temperatures dipped to 8.2 degrees Celsius.

Messi’s visit coincided with a typical Delhi winter, cold, grey skies blanketed with smog, giving social media plenty to laugh about. Pictures of foggy roads, commuters in masks, and hazy skylines quickly went viral, and fans responded with witty memes.

The scene in Delhi was a stark contrast to Mumbai, Messi’s previous stop. On December 14, the Wankhede Stadium hosted a smooth and festive event where Messi interacted with fans and Indian sports icons Sunil Chhetri and Sachin Tendulkar.

While Mumbai enjoyed clear skies and celebrations, Delhi’s fog added a uniquely local twist to Messi’s visit, reminding everyone that winter in the capital comes with its own surprises, and plenty of internet jokes.
