Mumbai Tenant Viral Reddit Post: A young tenant in Navi Mumbai has sparked a wave of online discussion after he shared a frustrating rental experience with his landlord. Posting in the r/Mumbai subreddit, he shared screenshots of a bizarre WhatsApp conversation that quickly grabbed people’s attention, and the post is now going viral. The tenant had rented a flat on a one-year agreement but had to leave just four months later due to personal reasons. "I had rented a flat in Navi Mumbai and signed a 1-year agreement. But due to some personal reasons, I had to move out after 4 months. There was no lock-in period mentioned in the agreement, so I followed the rules and gave a proper 1-month notice, as required," he wrote in the post.
To make the exit smooth, he even got the flat deep-cleaned and repainted. “I did all this out of basic courtesy and to avoid any last-minute disputes,” he wrote. But things didn’t go as planned. The real trouble began when it came to getting back his Rs 40,000 security deposit. Despite his polite follow-ups for over a month, the landlord only returned Rs 20,000 and gave strange reasons for keeping the rest.
“Now here comes the circus,” the tenant said in the post. "When I ask about the remaining amount, he hits me with the wildest excuses. First, he tells me that he had to pay ₹10K to a new broker to find a new tenant and that his previous broker didn’t refund him the brokerage, so I’m expected to cover his losses. Like... what??" He explained that he had already paid a full month’s brokerage when he moved in, and couldn’t understand why he was being held responsible for the landlord’s other dealings. “Why would I be liable for his internal mess with agents?” he asked, clearly frustrated.
What made it worse was the landlord’s casual attitude. “And after that, his audacity to send me an emoji on a serious text,” the tenant added, showing how lightly the landlord treated the issue. As more people came across the post, Reddit users started sharing their own horror stories with landlords. Some offered advice, while others simply shared their anger, making this post a trigger point for a larger conversation about how rental ethics are often ignored in cities like Mumbai.

The post, after being shared, went viral and received many comments from Reddit users. One user wrote, "Send him a legal notice and make sure you send a copy of that legal notice to the society chairman/secretary as well, just for 'information purposes.' Such landlords are nothing but loudmouths and the second they see any legal documentation, they shit their pants." "This is brilliant advice. Most people will get scared with just a legal notice, been there, done that," a second user added.
"All the people here taking the landlord's side and saying OP is lucky he got partial deposit back are snowflakes and/or have landlord bias themselves, they have probably never rented and do not understand the purpose of a leave and license agreement," added a third user. "When he goes to the police landlord will claim damages to things like plumbing, which can’t be proven even if the tenant has taken a video of the house when he left. There are a million ways to claim damages. It’s goodbye to that 13k, he is not getting it back," added a fourth user.
A similar situation happened with me. Lived in a flat for 2.5 years, and the landlady refused to return the deposit for 6+ months. Went to the cops, nothing happened. They said file a civil case, which is, of course time time-consuming," added a fifth user. "I swear to god, dealing with owners for deposit is just crazy and frustrating AF. I gave notice as part of the agreement, but still, after a month not yet received the deposit. I hate dealing with these entitled," added another user.
