It seems like the term Jalebi, a popular Indian sweet, is a name too difficult for people to understand in the US. Or maybe it’s simply too confusing or not ‘clear’ enough- otherwise, what else might be the reason behind THIS bizarre name change for Jalebi at a store in New York? A post was shared on social media, where the internet shared a picture of Jalebi being displayed at the store. What grabbed everyone’s attention was not the mouthwatering jalebi itself, but rather its name; Honey Pretzels. Believe it or not, that is what the store chose as Jalebi’s alternate name, despite Jalebi’s zero connections with honey and pretzels- at least in India. Another surprising factor was the price of the dish; USD 14.99 (around Rs 1260).

The post went viral almost immediately and pulled many reactions. Most people found the name change ‘offensive’, while the rest enquired about the place. A few also found it funny and shared jokes about it.

The Indian food post was shared on X (formerly Twitter), by the handle ‘chandniverse’. The post was captioned, “Babe wake up jalebi has a new name.”

“They also had the OG sweet, zoolbia babies (this is New Yorks best store, they can do no wrong),” the post further read. The post was shared two days ago and pulled more than a million views.

Taking to the comment section, people shared their take. “There should be a spicy doughnut aka medhu vadai as well?” a user said. “As a German, I have to say, these are not "Pretzels". These are maybe Spirals(?)” added a second person. “Why can't white people simply call it by its Hindi name,” added a third person.

“Shamefully, I once had to describe Mysore Pak that I brought from India to my friends as 'Butter Fudge'. They finished the entire box by that evening,” recalled another. “Where is Honey in Ingredients,” wrote a fifth person. “Deep-fried Crunchy Spirals of lightly kneaded dough dipped in sugar syrup,” added a sixth user.
