Nowruz 2024: With the onset of the lively spring all around the world, half the world’s population is celebrating the Persian New Year, also popular by the name Nowruz. Obviously, with the much-celebrated festival being recognised by almost ‘300 million people’, Google also did its bit to celebrate it, through Google Doodle. Google has temporarily replaced its ‘Google’ logo with an adorable doodle for Nowruz 2024. The doodle has been illustrated by artist Pendar Yousefi. With flowers and spring being the main theme, the Doodle is all about beautiful flowers and animals, with a touch of heavy Persian architecture and art .

The festival is celebrated annually, which falls in March, and this year, the day is being celebrated today- March 19. It is a 13-day festival which follows the Persian calendar, which is also known as the Solar Hijri Calendar. Along with celebrating the onset of spring and New Year, Nowruz also promotes ‘peace and harmony’.
“The annual festival has been around for over 3,000 years. The earliest origins of Nowruz trace back to ancient Iran (then Persia). It was held on the spring equinox to mark the start of the blooming season. As time went on, several countries and ethnic groups along the Silk Roads started adopting the tradition,” read the Google Doodles explanation about the festival.

Much like all the other festivals around the globe, Nowruz also involves gifts that people present to each other. Amid all that, the main ritual that is heavily connected to Nowruz is ‘haft-sīn’. The ‘haft-sīn’ ritual requires people to set out several items, which are mostly wheat, wheat pudding, olive, berries, vinegar, apple, and garlic, where each of the items represents something. As per the Google Doodle explanation, they represent ‘rebirth and good fortune, power and strength, love, sunrise, age and patience, beauty, and good health’ respectively.
