TTE Viral Video: Booking train tickets can be tricky for senior citizens, especially when it comes to getting comfortable lower berths. Long journeys can be tiring, and climbing to middle or upper berths isn’t easy for elderly passengers. Many wonder why the IRCTC system doesn’t automatically give them lower berths when they book tickets. Recently, a helpful Travel Ticket Examiner (TTE) shared a simple trick that could make this easier for seniors. The video, recorded on the Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express, has gone viral and sparked a lot of discussion online.
In the clip, the TTE was talking to a group of four senior passengers. He said, “Usme in logo ka ticket tha sabka, 4 logo mein sab log senior citizen hai aur inko jo berth mila hai, sako middle ya upper mila hai. Toh in sir ka ek doubt tha ki inko senior citizen hone par lower berth kyu nahi mila?" He then explained the solution, “Toh maine bataya ki maximum agar do log agar ek ticket mein book karte hai, tab unko mil sakta hai."
The TTE clarified that the system doesn’t automatically give lower berths if three or four seniors are booked on the same ticket. To work around this, he suggested splitting the group into smaller tickets. “Agar 4 log hai toh 2-2 karke book karo." By booking in pairs, each senior citizen can get the lower berth benefit and travel more comfortably.

The video was shared on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption, “Important and useful train ticket booking hack… if you are a senior citizen. Kudos to this TTE for calmly explaining this. He deserves a raise." The post quickly gained attention online, with many appreciating the TTE’s patience and helpful advice.
"This makes no sense. Last year, my Grandmother was allotted upper birth, she was 86. Thanks to Indian Railways," a user wrote. "Ridiculous. By default, senior citizens should get lower birthrates irrespective of numbers," a second user wrote. "So if my sister and I accompany my mother, who is a senior citizen, would she get a lower berth?" wrote a third user.
"Is it so difficult to program the software that once the age is input as above 60, automatically those persons should always be allotted the lower birth age. I mean, is it rocket science?" added a fourth user. "In this way, if a family is travelling with 6 people, if they book 2 in one go, then IRCTC will provide different bogies, like S1, S7, S10, which will be more difficult for a family with elderly persons. Don't fall in this trap," added another user.
