It might not be a ‘certified’ universal fact, but no one can deny that one usually has to be really lucky to get cooperative in-laws. Not every married couple ends up with in-laws who are much like their parents. In fact, there are more ‘ill-bonded in-laws’ stories to narrate than there are couples in the world. Experiencing something similar, a woman shared her ordeal with the internet community, where her shaky relations with her uncooperative mother-in-law compelled the woman and her fiance to cancel their wedding. The said couple instead decided to elope after ‘cutting’ ties with the mother-in-law. The story was shared on social media, which soon went viral and received reactions and suggestions from the netizens.
The post was shared on Reddit, by the handle ‘AmItheA**hole’. The post was captioned, “MIL has never tried to have a positive relationship with me. She makes sure I’m not included in conversations, belittles my achievements & talks down to me. Things escalated when I was planning my fiancés 30th. MIL fought me on every detail and accused me of not knowing my fiancé at all. (I planned a golf weekend away for him and his family) he loves golf.”
“Fiancé confronted MIL and asked why she didn’t like me. MIL admitted she doesn’t like me. Don’t like my partner driving me to his family events, didn’t like it took me a month to find employment when I moved to a different town to be with my fiancé. Fiancé receives calls and texts from MIL daily. If he doesn’t respond, she blames me,” the post further read.

The post, soon after getting shared, went viral and received a whole lot of reactions from the netizens. Most sided with the woman and the finance and commented on the mother-in-law being an ‘uncooperative’ lady, while the rest agreed with the plan to elope and suggested to rather use the saved money for a trip after marriage. The post was shared a day ago and pulled 2.3K upvotes from people.

Taking to the comment box, people shared their take. “NTA ELOPE! It will be so much fun! Use the funds to go somewhere magical, get the dress off your dreams (if that’s important to you), take the best photos, eat the best food, and have the time of your life. If they already hate you, you’ve got nothing to lose! Doooo ittttt,” a user said. “He wants you to be his meat shield so mommy will hate you and not him. I would worry more about some pre-marital counseling because he can’t seem to talk to mommy on his own. Best of luck to you OP,” said a second person.
“Absolutely agree with fiancé. Elope. Use the money for an amazing honeymoon and don't tell MIL where you're going. NTA,” added a third. “NTA, but why cancel the wedding? If you want a wedding, you should have a wedding. That doesn't mean you need to include your hateful MIL or anyone else who doesn't support you/your relationship,” said the next.
