What Is Chauranga Punishment? The country is reeling from a surge in violent crimes against women, with recent incidents sparking widespread outrage and demands for justice. The brutal rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 has sent shockwaves nationwide. The heinous crime, which took place in a seminar hall, has left the community horrified. Compounding the outrage, two nursery school children were sexually assaulted on school premises, further fueling public anger and calls for immediate action to address the escalating violence against women.

Amidst this backdrop, Bollywood actor Riteish Deshmukh advocated for the reintroduction of the 'Chauranga Punishment'.

What Is Chauranga Punishment?

During Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj rule, a severe punishment known as 'chauranga' was meted out to individuals found guilty of committing heinous crimes against women, specifically molestation or rape. This brutal yet fitting penalty involved the amputation of all four limbs - both hands and legs - of the perpetrator, rendering them utterly helpless and dependent on others for survival. This draconian punishment served as a strong deterrent, reflecting the kingdom's zero-tolerance policy towards such vile acts, and its commitment to protecting the dignity and safety of its female citizens.

On Tuesday, Riteish Deshmukh took to Instagram and wrote, “As a parent I am absolutely disgusted, pained and raging with anger!!Two 4 year old girls were sexually assaulted by the male cleaning staff member of the school. Schools are supposed to be as safe a place for kids as their own homes. Harshest punishment needs to be given to this demon. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in his times gave the guilty what they deserved - Chaurang- we need these laws back in action. #BadlapurCrime.”

Badlapur Sexual Assault Case

Two innocent kindergarten girls, aged just three and four, were allegedly subjected to unspeakable sexual abuse in the school toilet, a place where they should have felt safe and secure. The girls, with immense courage, confided in their parents about the horrific incident on August 12, according to sources. Prompt action was taken, and the accused was apprehended on August 17, bringing some solace to the traumatized victims and their families.

The accused has been charged under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, as well as multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including section 65(2) for rape on a girl under twelve years of age, section 74 for assault or criminal force with the intent to outrage modesty, section 75 for sexual harassment offences, and section 76 for assault or criminal force used with the intent to disrobe. These charges reflect the heinous nature of the crime and the need for severe punishment to ensure justice is served and to protect vulnerable children from such monstrous acts.
