Gen Z Stare is one of the most viral topics on social media these days. It has been said that Gen Z Stare means when somebody gives a black or empty look when asked a question. This expression can be seen mostly in youths and teenagers when some elderly person asks something. This can happen anywhere at school, in public places, restaurants, work and other places. Here is what people are talking about this matter online? Check out are some tweets.
A user said, “this gen z stare discourse just feels like the timeless tradition of ppl projecting resentment or malice onto ppl who clearly are just socially awkward. are the young people secretly out to get u or are they just uncomfortable.” Another said, “The gen z stare. The millenial pause. The gen x victim complex. The boomer innapropriate personal question. happy now.” Another user said, “anytime someone older than 25 is talking shit about gen z, i immediately side with gen z. millenials are literally doing the same shit that gen x and boomers did to them. before it was the avocado toast, now it's the gen z stare. society is just a cycle of adults bullying kids.”

Well! It’s quite difficult to say when the Gen Z stare came to trend, but it has been staying longer and is a point of debate on the Internet. Every generation has some habits which most people have. But blank stare has clearer reasons behind it, such as the internet and the pandemic. The Gen Z generation is quite habituated to talking to people over the phone and the internet as they got access to it early on. This can affect the behavioural change as well. They also faced the pandemic for a long time, which is why they were detached from public speaking, one-to-one talking and being physically present. This generation has seen Facebook, TikTok and Instagram from a very young age and is habituated to the online world rather than the physical world. After COVID, this behaviour escalated further which affected their behaviour, leading to ‘Gen Z stare’.

A professor at the University of Alabama named Jessica Maddox told, “When I first started hearing talk about the Gen Z stare, and people were kind of explaining what it is, I was like, ‘Oh, my God, this is what happens to me as a college professor’. This (look) very much accelerated after we returned to campus after Covid protocols.”
An assistant professor of communication technologies at Seton Hall University, Jess Rauchberg also said, “I think we are starting to really see the long term effects of constant digital media use, right? We think of the phone as an appendage to our bodies. If it’s a processing thing, it’s hard to imagine someone wouldn’t know how to nod or respond with a smile or just say ‘OK,’ but we may take for granted some of the social skills we have developed over the years because we didn’t have technology to deal with and we didn’t have to be isolated from our peers.”
Be it a real way of showcasing emotions or not, Gen Z stare has become a trend which might not be forgotten easily in future. This also led to conversations about how every generation of people communicates.
