Have you ever thought about how the sun rises at different times in different parts of India? While most of us wake up to the morning sun around the same time, there are places in our country where the day begins much earlier and others where the sun takes its own sweet time to show up. India stretches far from east to west, and because of this wide range, the timing of sunrise isn’t the same everywhere. The reason lies in the way the Earth rotates, from west to east, which makes eastern places see daylight first.

India’s First Sunrise: Dong Valley, Arunachal Pradesh:

The very first rays of the sun hit a small valley tucked away in the eastern tip of Arunachal Pradesh, Dong Valley. Located just a few kilometres from the Indo-China border, this place wakes up way before the rest of the country. In fact, during summer, the sunrise here can be as early as 4:00 AM.

Thanks to its position on the far eastern edge, Dong Valley gets to experience morning light before any other part of India. It’s a quiet, remote region, but when it comes to sunrise, it’s the first in line.

India’s Last Sunrise: Narayan Sarovar, Gujarat:

Now let’s travel to the opposite end, Gujarat. At the western edge of the country lies Narayan Sarovar in the Kutch district. While it’s known for being one of the last places in India to say goodbye to the sun at sunset, it’s also the place where the sun says good morning the latest. Because it’s on the far western side, the sun reaches this region only after lighting up the entire eastern and central parts of India. It’s not the sun’s fault though; it’s all about how the Earth spins.

A Beautiful Contrast:

So, to put it simply, Dong Valley in Arunachal Pradesh sees the first sunrise, and Narayan Sarovar in Gujarat witnesses the last sunrise in India. This difference is not just about time, it’s a reminder of how vast and diverse our country is, and how geography shapes even something as routine as morning light. Isn’t it amazing how one country can welcome the same sun at completely different times?
