Taking the world to see through its own lens, Wikimedia released a list of the most viewed articles this year on the English Wikipedia. The site was viewed over 84 billion times in 2023, as per the Wikimedia Foundation. People surely had a lot to search about. Releasing such a list after years, Wikimedia effortlessly took the entire internet community back on a ride that began its course at the year’s beginning. The list went viral worldwide, and gained equal attention in India as well, as it featured terms like Bollywood films, Indian cricket, and more. The last year-ender was published by the site in 2015, making this one rather rare and a first in almost a decade.
Most viewed articles on English Wikipedia 2023:
The top article topics that were searched the most this year were a combination of everything. From sports to cinema to even advancing technology, humankind had all kinds of questions for all kinds of beats.
Top 10:
Top 5- The first on the list was ‘ChatGPT’ with 49,490,406 pageviews, followed by this year’s ‘deaths’, with 42,666,860 pageviews. The third on the list was all about cricket as fans took over the internet the entire year, as the ‘2023 Cricket World Cup’ received 38,171,653 pageviews. India also managed to etch its name on this year’s list as the ‘Indian Premier League’ was in the fourth spot with 32,012,810 pageviews. The fifth most searched articles were about the blockbuster ‘Oppenheimer’, which pulled 28,348,248 pageviews.
Top 6 to 10- The ‘Cricket World Cup’ pulled 25,961,417 pageviews, with ‘J. Robert Oppenheimer’ on next spot with 25,672,469 pageviews. On the eighth, ‘Jawan’ pulled 21,791,126 pageviews with ‘2023 Indian Premier League’ and ‘Pathaan’ receiving 20,694,974 and 19,932,509 pageviews respectively.
India’s contribution:
India, being the populous and full of curious people ‘kind of’ country that it is, also contributed to the list. Breaking down the broader categories like sports and films, there were a number of terms related to which many articles received a huge amount of pageviews.
Sports:
‘Indian Premier League’ received 32,012,810 pageviews, followed by the ‘2023 Indian Premier League’ with 20,694,974 pageviews.
Cinema:
Shah Rukh Khan was truly the ‘hero’ who emerged at the top this year with his hits after hits. His film ‘Jawan’ pulled 21,791,126 pageviews, meanwhile, his ‘Pathaan’ got 19,932,509 pageviews.
Among the top 25 on the list by Wikimedia, ‘India’ with 13,850,178 pageviews also clinched the 21st spot along with the other terms mentioned above.
