Afghanistan has been rocked once again by a powerful earthquake, just days after one of the deadliest tremors in decades devastated parts of the country. According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck southeastern Afghanistan on Thursday, marking the third quake in the same region since Sunday. Tremors were also felt in neighbouring Pakistan, heightening fears among residents already reeling from destruction.

The latest quake follows a magnitude 6.0 earthquake on Sunday night that tore through the provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar, killing more than 2,200 people. It struck at a shallow depth of just 10 kilometres (6 miles), unleashing widespread devastation. Shallow quakes tend to be more dangerous because seismic waves have less distance to travel before reaching the surface, causing intense ground shaking and higher casualties.

Deputy government spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat confirmed that the death toll had risen sharply by Thursday as hundreds of bodies were pulled from collapsed mud and brick homes. Rescue operations continue, though poor infrastructure and blocked mountain roads are slowing efforts.

Devastation In Kunar

Kunar province has suffered the greatest destruction. Entire villages were flattened by the quake, with people buried under rubble. Houses built with mud, unbaked bricks, and wood offered little resistance to the force of the tremors. Survivors, many of them injured, are now without shelter, struggling in harsh conditions while waiting for aid.

Relief teams face major challenges in reaching remote valleys surrounded by steep mountains. “Rescue efforts are still ongoing,” Fitrat said, “but lack of resources and poor roads are hampering progress.”

International Aid Arrives

In the wake of the disaster, China pledged USD 7 million in emergency relief, including tents, blankets, and food supplies. However, humanitarian needs remain immense. Thousands of Afghans have been displaced, with urgent shortages of medical supplies, drinking water, and shelter.

Aid groups warn that without immediate assistance, the death toll could rise further due to exposure, hunger, and untreated injuries. The United Nations has also appealed for swift international support to prevent an even greater humanitarian crisis.
