Prime Minister Narendra Modi shook hands with his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, as the Indian leader arrived at the G7 Summit venue on Tuesday. Canadian PM Mark Carney received PM Modi as he arrived at the venue of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta. This marks his sixth consecutive participation in the G7 Summit and his first visit to Canada in a decade.

The major geopolitical development came on the same day when Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was killed outside a gurudwara in Surrey in 2024. His killing led to major chaos in the relations between the two nations-- from former PM Justin Trudeau alleging Indian agents' involvement in the killing of Nijjar to the expulsion of top diplomats in New Delhi and Ottawa.

Posting smiling pictures of PM Modi and Carney on social media platforms, the Ministry of External Affairs underscored the meeting as "building bridges for global progress and cooperation". The ministry said the Canadian leader has greeted PM Modi at the G7 Summiy in Kananaski. Both leaders are scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting later today.

PM Modi's Canada visit

PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome at the Calgary airport, where India's acting high commissioner, Chinmoy Naik, was among those who received him. Upon arriving in Calgary, Canada, PM Modi on Monday (local time) said he will meet various leaders at the G7 Summit and share his thoughts on important global issues. PM Modi said he will also emphasise the priorities of the Global South. This visit is part of PM Modi's three-nation official tour, which began with Cyprus and will conclude with Croatia.

Why is PM Modi's Canada visit is important?

PM Modi's visit comes at a pivotal moment for India-Canada relations, which Carney is trying to reset after it had been marred by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was influenced by Khalistan supporters. The bilateral meeting with the Canadian PM will be in the spotlight amid strained relations between the two nations and experts said this would be a great opportunity for both leaders to give a fresh push to the relations. However, PM Modi will be missing US President Donald Trump, who was cutting short his presence at the summit to return home. Earlier French President Emmanuel Macron had claimed the US president would be leaving early to deal with the Iran-Israel crisis- a claim refuted by Trump in a humiliating manner.
