A 40-year-old Hindu man, Bajendra Biswas, was shot dead by a colleague in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district, days after another Hindu man was lynched by a mob in the same region. The incident occurred on Monday, December 29, at around 6:30 pm in the Mehrabari area of Bhalukaupazila, according to news agency ANI, citing RTV Online. The accused, identified as Noman Mia, has been arrested. Both the victim and the accused were members of the Bangladesh Ansar, the country’s largest paramilitary force.
APC Md Azahar Ali, an Ansar member on duty with the Labib Group and an eyewitness to the shooting, confirmed the incident. He told RTV Online that Bajendra Biswas and Noman Mia were sitting together in his room at the time.
“Suddenly, Noman Mia pressed the shotgun against Bajendra Das’s thigh and said, ‘Shall I shoot?’ and then fired,” Ali said. After the shooting, the accused fled the scene. The eyewitness added that there was no argument, dispute or visible conflict between the two prior to the incident.
Arrest And Investigation
Biswas sustained critical injuries and died shortly after being shot. Police launched an immediate operation and later arrested Noman Mia. Authorities are investigating the motive behind the killing and examining whether the firearm was used in violation of Ansar service rules.
According to the RTV Online report cited by ANI, Bajendra Biswas was the son of Probitra Biswas of Kadirpur village under Sylhet Sadarupazila. The accused, Noman Mia, is the son of Lutfar Rahman from the Baluturi Bazar area under Taherpur Police Station in Sunamganj district.
Earlier Lynching Of Dipu Chandra Das
The shooting comes amid heightened communal tensions following the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, another Hindu man, in Mymensingh earlier this month. Dipu Chandra Das was allegedly attacked by an angry mob over accusations of blasphemy on December 18. He was reportedly beaten to death, tied to a tree and set on fire.
The lynching sparked protests in several parts of India and drew widespread condemnation. Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, acknowledged and condemned the incident, assuring action against those responsible.
