Bangkok: Bangladesh's Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus presented a 10-year-old photograph to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their bilateral meeting in Bangkok on Friday. "Professor Muhammad Yunus is presenting a photo to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their bilateral meeting in Bangkok on Friday. The photo is about Prime Minister Narendra Modi presenting a gold medal to Professor Yunus at the 102nd Indian Science Congress on January 3, 2015," read the post of Chief Adviser of the interim government of Bangladesh.

When PM Modi presented gold medal to Yunus

In 2015, PM Modi presented a gold medal to Yunus at the opening ceremony of the 102nd Indian Science Congress in Mumbai. During the event, Yunus, along with four other Nobel Laureates and five scientists from India received the gold medal during the inaugural session of the Indian Science Congress in the presence of more than 20,000 strong audience including Ministers, Chief Ministers, leading scientists, Vice Chancellors of dozens of Indian Universities and delegates from India and abroad.

"We have here with us Nobel Laureates, whose work in science has given new hope against dreaded diseases. We also have one whose own understanding of social science gave the poorest a life of hope, opportunity and dignity," PM Modi said during an inaugural speech, referring to the Nobel Laureates who were honoured.

India-Bangladesh tension

It is worth noting Friday's meeting that came on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit and was the first-ever bilateral meeting between the two leaders. The meeting with Yunus came days after his controversial statement regarding seven sister states and his request to the Chinese President for expansion near the Chicken's corridor triggered a political row in New Delhi.

Earlier last night, PM Modi and Yunus, sat side by side during the official dinner hosted by Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra for the visiting Heads of State and Heads of Government attending the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok. The official X handle of the Chief Advisor of the Government of Bangladesh posted screen grabs of both leaders sitting side by side at the dinner table as the Thai PM welcomed the BIMSTEC leaders.

Local media in Bangladesh quoted Chief Advisor's Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad as saying that both leaders "met each other" during the official dinner. The interim government has been keen on holding the first-ever bilateral talks between the two leaders on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok.
