Sheikh Hasina Extradition Demand: Riding on the landslide victory in the 13th Parliamentary elections of Bangladesh, the BNP has renewed its demand for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina from India to face a criminal trial in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party said it would pursue the return of Sheikh Hasina through diplomatic channels.

As per a report by the news agency PTI, a senior leader of BNP, Salahuddin Ahmed, said the issue would be taken up at the highest levels, adding, “We have consistently pressed for her extradition in accordance with the law. This is an issue between the foreign ministries of the two countries. We have urged the government of India to send her back to face trial in Bangladesh.”

Sheikh Hasina Conviction And Exile In India

After a youth-led protest in Bangladesh in July 2024, the then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country and has been living in India since. Bangladesh has been running on an interim government since August 2024. Sheikh Hasina has been convicted of crimes against humanity in connection with the violent crackdown on protesters, leading to the killing of many. A Dhaka tribunal sentenced her to death in absentia in November 2025.

Is BNP’s Demand A Threat To Warming Ties With India

While renewing the demand for the extradition, the BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed affirmed that the party seeks friendly ties with all neighbouring countries, including India; however, such relations must be based on mutual respect and equality.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, in November, said India had received Bangladesh’s extradition request and was examining it under ongoing legal processes, reiterating that India is committed to peace, democracy and stability in Bangladesh.

After BNP leader Tarique Rahman declared his victory in the Bangladesh election, winning over 210 seats and crossing the threshold of 151 seats, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first leaders to greet Rahman for the landslide win. Rahman acknowledged the PM’s greeting and expressed his gratitude.

While Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League has been a favourable government in neighbour state for India, experts see the thumping victory of the BNP against Jamaat, which is known for a hardline anti-India stance, as a positive sign.
