Two main suspects in the murder of Bangladeshi political activist Osman Hadi have reportedly fled to India through the Meghalaya border, prompting urgent communication between Bangladesh and Indian officials for their arrest and extradition. Hadi, a prominent political figure and critic of both India and Bangladesh’s Awami League, was shot in the head on December 12 during an election campaign in central Dhaka’s Bijoynagar area.
He was later flown to Singapore for treatment but succumbed to his injuries on December 18. His killing sparked widespread protests and unrest across Bangladesh.
Details Of The Escape
During a press briefing at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) media centre, Additional Commissioner SN Nazrul Islam revealed that the suspects, Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Sheikh, crossed into India via the Haluaghat border. “After crossing, they were initially received by an individual named Purti, and later transported by a taxi driver, Sami, to Tura city in Meghalaya,” Nazrul said. He added that Bangladesh authorities are coordinating with Indian counterparts through formal and informal channels to ensure the suspects’ arrest and extradition.
Osman Hadi played a leading role in the July 2024 uprising that led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government. After the political shift, Hadi formed the Inquilab Mancha platform and was preparing to contest the parliamentary elections in February.
Unrest And Diplomatic Tensions
His assassination triggered mass unrest, including attacks on newspaper offices such as Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, and cultural organisations including Chhayanat and Udichi Shilpi Goshthi. The unrest also extended to central Bangladesh, where a Hindu factory worker in Mymensingh was lynched and his body set on fire. Allegations that Hadi’s killers fled to India have further strained diplomatic ties between Bangladesh and India.
