The Immigration Department has detained a Bangladeshi national at Delhi airport and deported him back to Bangladesh. The accused has been identified as Mahdi Ahmed Reza Hasan, also known as Ahmed Raza Hasan Mehdi, a resident of Habiganj in Bangladesh.
Officials said he was intercepted while attempting to flee to Europe, reportedly en route to Finland, using India as a transit point.
Murder Charges in Bangladesh
According to immigration, Hasan is wanted in connection with the murder of Sub-Inspector Santosh Chowdhury, a Hindu police officer, during widespread violence in Bangladesh on August 5, 2024.
The killing took place amid a nationwide movement that led to the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. On that day, multiple incidents of arson and looting were reported across the country.
Chowdhury was attacked during violence at the Baniachang police station in Habiganj. Reports state that he was lynched and burnt alive by a mob after protesters surrounded and set fire to the police station. His body was later found hanging from a tree. A case was registered in Bangladesh, and a search operation was underway to trace the accused.
According to the Jagran.com the viral video had earlier surfaced in which Hasan allegedly claimed responsibility for the officer’s killing.
Background of the Incident
On the day of the attack, students and villagers had organised a protest march following reports of deaths elsewhere. As the crowd approached the police station, police reportedly opened fire, killing six people. In retaliation, angry protesters allegedly stormed and torched the station, trapping several personnel inside.
Sub-Inspector Chowdhury had married less than a year before the unrest. Three months after his death, his wife gave birth to a son. He was his parents’ only child.
Arrest at Delhi Airport
Indian immigration agencies intercepted Hasan at Delhi airport based on alerts and inter-agency coordination. He was detained during document verification while preparing to board an international flight to Europe.
After completing the required legal formalities, Indian authorities deported him to Bangladesh in accordance with established procedures.
Further Legal Action
Bangladesh authorities will now proceed with further action under their domestic laws. Indian agencies stated that immigration checks and information-sharing mechanisms have been strengthened to monitor cross-border crime and track wanted accused.
