Indian-origin businesswoman Vasundhara Oswal, daughter of billionaire industrialist Pankaj Oswal, on Wednesday alleged that she and her family faced racism outside their home in Switzerland. She shared a video of a confrontation with a Swiss neighbour on Instagram and claimed that the incident reflects a wider issue of racism and xenophobia in the country.

Vasundhara Shares Video Of Dispute

In the clip shared by her, an elderly Swiss man is seen objecting to Oswal’s family using a lawn mower on a Thursday afternoon. The neighbour reportedly told the family they were "not in India". Responding to the remark, Vasundhara said there was no law stopping them from using a lawn mower at that time. After repeated remarks from him, the Oswal family asked him to leave their property.

Raises Concerns Over Racism In Switzerland

Vasundhara also said their gardener had informed them that another neighbour was using a lawn mower, but the same person did not object to it. Along with the video, Vasundhara shared a detailed note in the caption, describing the larger issue of racism and xenophobia in Switzerland. She claimed that many such incidents are often ignored or not reported. Citing statistics, she said 17 per cent of people living in Switzerland have experienced racial discrimination.

“When you receive a random man at your house gate demanding that you turn your lawn mower off on a Thursday afternoon as “you are not in India” you would think this incident is happening in the USA or the UK but actually this is happening in Switzerland,” she wrote. Vasundhara said she was disappointed by the treatment she and her family experienced despite living in Switzerland for eight years.

"As Indians who have lived in Switzerland for the past 8 years and built one of the largest houses in the country we are sad to say that racism and xenophobia in Switzerland is at large and is unspoken of. Targeted specifically towards different skin tones that are doing better than the average local population," she further wrote. She also urged Indians to be careful while choosing countries for tourism, education or permanent settlement.

Vasundhara asked them to consider how Indian culture and people are treated. “So here we are exposing the xenophobia in Switzerland we have had to deal with so the next time you choose a country to visit, study or settle down in you can truly understand if it deserves “Indian” hard earned money in terms of tourism and other monetary support when actually the local population looks down upon India , Indian culture and Indians,” she added.
