British PM Starmer's Chief Of Staff Morgan McSweeney Resigns Amid Mandelson-Epstein Row

Morgan McSweeney Resigns: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, has resigned amid the growing controversy over the 2024 appointment of Peter Mandelson as British Ambassador to the United States, despite his links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

In a statement on Sunday, McSweeney's resignation comes as pressure mounts on Starmer following the release of emails that reveal Mandelson’s relationship with Epstein. The scandal is seen as one of the most serious crises of Starmer's 18 months in power, particularly regarding his decision to appoint Mandelson to Washington in 2024, after files exposed the extent of Mandelson's ties to the late sex offender.

The departure of McSweeney, 48, the political strategist who was instrumental in Starmer's rise to power, throws the future direction of the government into doubt, less than two years after the Labour Party won one of the largest parliamentary majorities in modern British history.

Mandelson had served as the UK Ambassador to the United States from February to September 2025. McSweeney, in announcing his resignation, stated that the decision to appoint Mandelson was a mistake that had harmed both the party and the country.

"After careful reflection, I have decided to resign from the government. The decision to appoint Peter Mandelson was wrong. He has damaged our party, our country, and trust in politics itself," McSweeney said.

"I advised the Prime Minister to make that appointment and I take full responsibility for that advice," he added.

McSweeney, who was both a close friend and supporter of Mandelson, has been criticised by some Labour MPs and political rivals for not making sure proper background checks were done before Mandelson’s appointment. He had been chief of staff since October 2024, after Sue Gray resigned following a disagreement over pay and donations.
