Canada School Shooting: A chilling revelation has emerged following the horrific school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, Canada. OpenAI, the organisation behind ChatGPT, confirmed on Friday that it had identified and flagged the suspect's account months before the tragedy but decided against notifying law enforcement at the time, citing a lack of "imminent threat."

The suspect, 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, had his account flagged by OpenAI’s internal safety systems as early as June of last year for potentially promoting violent activities.

Why Was Law Enforcement Not Alerted?

OpenAI admitted that while they considered informing the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) after the initial flag, their internal review concluded there was no "concrete or immediate" threat that warranted police intervention. Under the company's current safety protocols, authorities are only contacted when there is a "credible and immediate risk of serious physical harm."

Following the initial investigation, Rootselaar’s account was eventually banned in June 2025 for violating OpenAI’s usage policies. However, it was only after the news of the massacre broke that the tech giant proactively reached out to Canadian officials to share data regarding the suspect's interactions with ChatGPT.

Official Statements

An OpenAI spokesperson expressed condolences to the victims, stating, "Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the tragedy in Tumbler Ridge. We have proactively contacted the RCMP to share relevant information and remain committed to supporting the ongoing investigation."

RCMP Staff Sergeant Chris Clark confirmed that OpenAI initiated contact following the shooting. He noted that investigators are currently conducting a forensic sweep of the suspect’s electronic devices, social media profiles, and broader online footprint to piece together his digital history.

Details Of Massacre

The sequence of events began when Van Rootselaar reportedly murdered his mother and stepbrother at their residence. He then proceeded to a local school in Tumbler Ridge, where he opened fire, killing a 39-year-old teaching assistant and five students, aged between 12 and 13. The suspect ultimately died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

While police have noted that the suspect had a history of mental health struggles, a specific motive for the killings has not yet been established. This incident marks Canada’s deadliest mass killing since the 2020 Nova Scotia attacks, where a gunman claimed 22 lives through shooting and arson.
