While many seek quick wealth through lotteries, the reality is that such shortcuts rely more on luck than effort. A bizarre legal case highlighting this has emerged from the Baohe District of Hefei, in China’s central Anhui province.
According to Chinese business reports, a man identified only by his surname, He, purchased a massive quantity of lottery tickets from a company in 2023. After failing to win, he took the bold step of suing the Lottery Management Centre and the salesperson, a man named Zhang, demanding a full refund of his investment plus interest.
Records show that He spent a staggering 900,000 yuan (approximately USD 130,000) on losing lottery tickets within a single month.
The Legal Argument
In his lawsuit, He alleged that Zhang's method of announcing lottery results via social media was illegal. He argued that this technicality should render his purchase contract invalid, thereby obligating Zhang and the lottery center to return his 900,000 yuan with interest.
The Court’s Verdict
As reported by the South China Morning Post, the court rejected his appeal. The presiding judge noted that there was no evidence suggesting He was coerced or unfairly influenced by Zhang to make the purchases. The court emphasized that as an adult with full civil capacity, He should have understood that buying a lottery ticket does not guarantee a win.
Furthermore, the court highlighted a "Risk Notification Letter." It was revealed that Zhang had repeatedly advised He to be rational with his spending and had even presented the risk disclosure document to him. However, He chose to ignore these warnings and continued his high-stakes spending.
“Buying a lottery ticket may offer the chance of a large prize, but it also carries a significant risk of loss. Players must remain rational and cautious, particularly when large sums of money are involved,” the presiding judge stated to the media.
