Covid-19 is once again spreading across several parts of Asia, with new waves of infections reported in Hong Kong, Singapore, China, and Thailand. Although the virus remains endemic, recent data suggests these countries are now experiencing a fresh surge. Experts attribute the rise to waning immunity among populations and a decline in booster vaccinations, particularly among older and vulnerable individuals.
In Hong Kong, the situation is particularly concerning. Albert Au, head of the Communicable Disease Branch at the Centre for Health Protection, warned that "the virus’s activity is quite high." The city recently recorded the highest percentage of COVID-positive respiratory samples in a year.
In the week ending May 3, 31 deaths were reported among 81 severe Covid-19 cases, 83 per cent of which involved people aged 65 and above. Infections spiked from 1.7 per cent in mid-March to 11.4 per cent, surpassing even the August 2024 peak. Sewage surveillance, which is considered a strong indicator of viral spread, has detected elevated viral loads, confirming that community transmission is widespread in the city of over 7 million residents.
Concerns Rise For Children
Hospitals in Hong Kong are also seeing a noticeable increase in paediatric Covid-19 patients. Most of these children are unvaccinated. Medical authorities are urging parents to ensure their children receive vaccinations, especially as schools remain active and seasonal illnesses continue to circulate.
Singapore And Thailand
In Singapore, medical professionals are observing a similar trend. Doctors suggest there is no need for widespread panic. According to a report by Channel News Asia, the uptick in cases is largely seen as a result of waning immunity. Healthcare providers are treating most Covid-19 cases like seasonal flu, with patients typically recovering without serious complications or hospitalisation. Thailand's Department of Disease Control also reported two cluster outbreaks in 2025, noting a rise in cases after the annual Songkran festival held in April.
India Remains Stable
While parts of Asia are seeing renewed waves, India’s Covid-19 status remains calm. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the country currently has only 93 active cases. There are no indications yet of a new wave forming, and healthcare infrastructure remains stable.
