In a sharp response to US President-elect Donald Trump's warning of imposing tariffs on eight NATO countries unless Greenland is handed over, Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said, 'Europe will not be blackmailed.'
Besides Frederiksen's strong statement, a joint warning was issued by the leaders of Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has threatened to impose a 10 per cent tariff from February 1 on all products exported to America from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland.
The US President said that the tariff will rise to 25 per cent from June 1 if a deal for the total purchase of Greenland is not done, adding, “until such time as a deal is reached for the complete and total purchase of Greenland.”
Danish PM said that she has been receiving ‘great support’ and has been in an ‘intensive dialogue’ with leaders from the UK, France and Germany. “I am pleased with the consistent messages from the rest of the continent: Europe will not be blackmailed," she added.
She further reiterated Denmark’s stand on the issues, saying that Greenland is a self-governed territory under Danish control. “We want to cooperate, and it is not we who are seeking conflict," Frederiksen said.
Her statement followed the joint comment issued by the eight countries targeted by Trump’s proposed tariffs. Britain, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden said the threats ‘undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral.’
Since returning to power for the second time, Donald Trump has expressed the desire to seize the vast Arctic island, an autonomous territory of Denmark.
