A disturbing video showing an elderly Iranian woman with blood-like liquid on her face defiantly confronting security forces has gone viral on social media, becoming a powerful symbol of growing public anger against Iran’s Islamic regime amid nationwide protests.
In the widely circulated clip, the woman is seen walking through a street protest, bleeding from her mouth as she chants slogans against the country’s leadership. “I’m not afraid. I’ve been dead for 47 years,” she shouts, as stunned bystanders look on. The statement is widely viewed as a reference to Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, which transformed the country into a Shiite Islamic republic.
The video surfaced at a time when Iranian authorities have intensified efforts to suppress anti-government demonstrations, including imposing internet blackouts and cutting international phone services in several regions.
Potrayed Decades Of Anger
The woman’s words have resonated strongly online, with many interpreting them as a reflection of decades-long political repression and social restrictions imposed after the overthrow of the pro-Western Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. The revolution brought cleric Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to power and reshaped Iran’s political and social fabric.
Iranian-American journalist and activist Masih Alinejad shared the video on X, calling it “the voice of a woman who is fed up with the Islamic Republic.” In her post, Alinejad said the regime “took our rights 47 years ago and turned a nation into hostages,” adding that people now feel they have nothing left to lose.
It remains unclear whether the red liquid seen on the woman’s face is blood or a symbolic act of protest. Iranian authorities have not commented on the video.

Crackdown Intensifies Across Iran
The viral clip comes amid one of the most intense waves of unrest Iran has seen in recent years. Protests have been reported in multiple cities and towns, driven initially by economic hardship but increasingly fuelled by political anger and calls for regime change.
Iran has been grappling with soaring inflation, a sharply devalued currency, rising food prices and widespread unemployment. These pressures have pushed thousands onto the streets, with demonstrations now openly targeting the ruling clerical system. According to human rights groups, more than 1,000 people have been arrested nationwide in recent days. At least six protesters were reportedly killed in a single incident in Ilam province, while overall casualties linked to the unrest have continued to rise.
Authorities responded by restricting internet access and international communications, a move rights groups say is aimed at limiting coordination and blocking footage of the crackdown from reaching the outside world.
Despite calls for demonstrations by Iran’s exiled crown prince Reza Pahlavi, the protests remain largely leaderless, driven by spontaneous public participation. From street marches to chants from apartment windows, anger against the regime has spread across urban and rural areas alike. Slogans such as “Death to the dictator” and “Death to the Islamic Republic” have echoed through Iranian cities, underscoring the depth of public frustration.
