Ukraine had offered the US battle-tested technology to counter Iranian drones months before the Iran conflict escalated. However, the proposal was dismissed, a decision now considered a major "tactical error" by some US officials. In the conflict that has entered its twelfth day now, American bases in several Middle East countries were attacked by Tehran using the Shahed-136 kamikaze drones.

According to a report by Axios, Ukrainian officials had warned Washington about Iranian drone threats and offered a solution nearly seven months before the drones began testing US defences in the Middle East. The report added that Kyiv had also prepared a PowerPoint presentation detailing how its battlefield-tested technology could help Washington shoot down Iranian drones, while protecting US troops in regional conflict like this.

What Were US' 'Tactical Errors?'

In August 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reportedly pitched a proposal to US President Donald Trump, showcasing Kyiv-developed technology that could counter Iranian drones. However, despite Ukraine's efforts, the proposal was rejected by the US. The Axios report, quoted a US official as saying: "If there's a tactical error or a mistake, we made leading up to this (war in Iran), this was it."

Ukraine's Warning To US

According to the report, the presentation displayed a map of the Middle East. The text mentioned: "Iran is improving its Shahed one-way-attack drone design." The proposal called for creating "drone combat hubs" in Turkey, Jordan and the Persian Gulf states, where US military bases are located. "We wanted to build the 'drone walls' and all the things necessary like the radar, et cetera," a Ukrainian official told Axios.

The report comes after the US on Friday announced plans to deploy its own Shahed-killing drone system, known as Merops. Iran's Shahed drones, which are said to be relatively cheap, have been linked to the deaths of seven US service members during the ongoing conflict.

So far, Ukraine has been the most experienced country in the world to combat Shaheds. The drones, which were bought by Russia, and later reproduced and labelled as Geran drones have been largely used in its conflict with Ukraine.
