iPhone 17 Pro price in India vs USA: A recently released iPhone Affordability Index by the World of Statistics has highlighted extreme global income inequality. The index states that an average American worker is able to buy the newly released Apple iPhone 17 Pro (256GB) in merely 4 working days (32 hours). In sharp contrast to this, it would take a hardworking average Indian worker an unbelievable 160 working days (1,280 hours) to purchase the same phone.

What Is iPhone Affordability Index?

The index offers a simple way to understand purchasing power across countries using Apple’s flagship smartphone as a reference.

• Benchmark Phone: iPhone 17 Pro (256GB)
• Price Data: Retail price from Apple online stores within each country
• Income Data: Average wages and work hours data from databases such as the International Labour Organisation and, in the case of the US, the Bureau of Labor Statistics
• Calculation: Retail price divided by daily wage is equal to the number of 8-hour workdays to purchase the phone

iPhone Affordability: G20 And Global Overview

For most of the G20 countries, the iPhone Affordability Index remains under 50 working days or 400 work hours. But India stands out as the least affordable country in the index; you would need a whopping 160 working days or 1,280 work hours to amass enough cash to buy the Apple iPhone 17 Pro.

Why Does India Stand Out?

Even though India is one of the leading centers for iPhone production, it is the most unaffordable country for the iPhone 17 Pro. The phone has a price tag of Rs 82,900, and the average Indian worker makes around Rs 518 per day.

Factors Contributing to the Affordability Gap

• Import Duties and Taxes: Exorbitant import taxes and GST raise the retail price of iPhones in India.
• Local Pricing Strategies: Apple's premium brand strategy makes the iPhone a luxury product in India.
• Lower Average Wages: India's median monthly wage is much lower than in high-income nations.
• Economic Inequality: Large informal sector and income inequality worsen the affordability problem.
