US President Donald Trump has once again claimed credit for helping ease rising military tensions between India and Pakistan, both nuclear-armed neighbours with a history of conflict. Speaking at an event on Thursday, Trump said that he played a behind-the-scenes role in de-escalating the latest standoff, although India strongly denied any US mediation.

Speaking at event in Qatar, Trump said, "I don't want to say I did, but I sure as hell helped settle the problem between Pakistan and India last week, which was getting more and more hostile." "All of a sudden, you’ll start seeing missiles of a different type, and we got it settled."

He went on to add that both nations were happy with the outcome and that he advocated for trade over conflict. “Let’s do trade instead of war,” he said. “Pakistan was very happy with that, and India was very happy with that, and I think they’re on the way.”

Trump further remarked, “They’ve been fighting for about a thousand years… I could settle that up. Let me settle it up, and let’s get them all together.” The former President emphasised that the conflict was “really going to be escalating out of control” before intervention happened.

India Strongly Refutes Trump’s Comments

Earlier, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a detailed rebuttal denying any US involvement in the ceasefire that followed heightened military activity earlier in May.

The MEA stated, “From the time Operation Sindoor started on May 7 till the understanding on cessation of military action on May 10, there were conversations between Indian and U.S. leaders on the evolving military situation. The issue of trade did not come up in any of these discussions.”

The Indian government emphasised that the ceasefire understanding was reached independently and that India had not sought or accepted any external mediation in its national security decisions. “There was no discussion of any US-brokered ceasefire or trade-off as implied by President Trump,” a senior MEA official said.
