The Trump administration has issued a stark warning to Harvard University, threatening to terminate all federal funding over the school’s failure to protect Jewish students from harassment and discrimination. A letter sent Monday by a federal civil rights task force concluded that Harvard violated civil rights laws that require universities to safeguard students from discrimination based on race or national origin.

The letter, obtained by the Associated Press and first reported by The Wall Street Journal, accuses Harvard of being at times a "willful participant in anti-Semitic harassment" against Jewish students, faculty, and staff. According to investigators, university leaders allowed antisemitism to fester on campus, turning a blind eye to multiple incidents and complaints.

Federal Warning To Harvard

“Failure to institute adequate changes immediately will result in the loss of all federal financial resources and continue to affect Harvard’s relationship with the federal government,” the task force warned. The finding marks the latest escalation in a long-running standoff between the Trump White House and the Ivy League institution.

Harvard, which receives over USD 2.6 billion in federal funding, primarily for research and educational grants, had earlier resisted federal demands for sweeping reforms in campus governance, hiring practices, and admissions policies. The university’s reluctance to cooperate now risks further financial and reputational consequences.

Allegations Of Discrimination And Harassment

The administration’s letter emphasised that equal protection under the law requires safeguarding all students, including Jews, from hostility and discrimination, regardless of ideological or ethnic lines.

"Harvard’s inaction in the face of these civil rights violations is a clear example of the demographic hierarchy that has taken hold of the university,” the letter states. It further criticizes the institution’s perceived prioritization of “oppressed group identity” over individual merit, alleging that such ideology has enabled a toxic climate for Jewish students.

Reports cited by the task force describe Jewish students being forced to hide their identities, facing exclusion in classrooms and campus events, and even being denied fair academic treatment.
