Rongzhi was allegedly involved in robbery, extortion and the murder of seven people between 1996 and 1999. Jiangxi Provincial High People's Court last year upheld her death sentence as it heard her appeal after one one-year sentence.

Besides, all her properties were confiscated by the authorities owing to the crimes she committed. The High Court maintained that Rongzhi and her boyfriend, Fa Ziying, intentionally killed people and used violent ways to gain illegal possession of their properties. Fa was captured in Hefei, Anhui Province in 1999 and was sentenced to death.

As per reports, Rongzhi was on the run for almost 20 years and was ultimately nabbed in Fujian province in 2019. During the trials, she claimed she was a victim as her boyfriend Fa used her when she was 21 years old. She said she was often beaten and tortured and even thought of dying by suicide. She even apologized to the victim's family and offered to compensate.
