The US President Donald Trump on Thursday revealed the design of his administration's $5 million ‘Gold Card’ visa. The card is said to be a premium path to avail the US citizenship and an alternative to America’s existing 35-year-old EB-5 investor program.

Holding the card before reporters, Trump said, “You know what that card is? It’s the gold card — the Trump card.” Adding, “For $5 million, this could be yours.” Trump also revealed that he is the first buyer of the Gold Card. The president said that the card will be out in less than two weeks, adding, “pretty exciting, right?”

“If we sell a million, that’s $5 trillion,” he said. Regarding demand from the business community, he added, “I think we will sell a lot because I think there’s really a thirst.”

What Is The Gold Card

Announced earlier in February, the Gold Card visa program offers residency to foreign nationals in exchange for a $5 million investment, effectively granting them green card-level privileges. However, the card does not offer immediate US citizenship. It is expected to serve as a pathway to citizenship at a later stage.

Trump highlighted that the program would attract business leaders capable of creating jobs and driving economic growth, noting, "They’ll be wealthy and they’ll be successful, and they’ll be spending a lot of money and paying a lot of taxes and employing a lot of people, and we think it’s going to be extremely successful."

Additionally, American companies can buy Gold Cards to recruits non-Americans in their companies to work in the US.

Effect On Indians

While the Gold Card is anticipated to attract huge investment for the US, it can widen the inequalities in the immigration system based on financial status. Indian applicants—many of whom have long relied on the EB-5 programme—now face a steeper $5 million hurdle.
