Hassan Nasrallah News: Lebanon's Hassan Nasrallah, who has been at the forefront of Hezbollah's fight against Israel since the beginning of the Gaza war, has reportedly been killed, Israeli Defence Forces claimed on Saturday. Nasrallah has been missing since Israeli missile strikes pounded Beirut on Friday, putting the global spotlight on the hardliner Shia cleric, who once fought against the "Islamist extremists" alongside the Syrian army.
The news which was rejected as 'untrue' by Hezbollah leadership to Reuters, has now gained traction as no statement by Nasrallah surfaced even after 12 hours of the Beirut strike. While Iranian news agencies have refuted the claims, IDF sources indicated that this might be the end of Nasrallah's rule in Lebanon.
Who Is Hassan Nasrallah | Five Points
1. Describing Nasrallah just as the top Shia cleric of Lebanon would be an understatement since he is at the forefront of the fight of Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militia, against Israel. Born in 1960 in a small Beirut suburb, Nasrallah started his career as a religious teacher and later joined Hezbollah as a member.
2. Nasrallah went to Iran for religious studies but returned to Lebanon after a brief period after an Israeli airstrike killed Abbas al-Musawi, the then secretary general of Hezbollah, which prompted Nasrallah to take charge of the paramilitary group.
3. Nasrallah and Hezbollah's popularity among Lebanese hardliners sored after they forced Israel to withdraw from Southern Lebanon in 2000. The new leader also managed to get hands-on with long-range rockets.
4. Nasrallah has already appointed his successor in case he dies. In October 2008, he appointed his cousin Hashim Safi Al-Din as the next in line of Hezbollah leadership.
5. Most of Nasrallah's family members have already died of natural causes or Israeli attacks. In 1997, Nasrallah lost his eighteen-year-old Muhammad Hadi in an Israeli attack near Mikh, after he reportedly said that he was proud to be the father of one of the martyrs. He is living with his wife Fatimah Yasin in Beirut.
Nasrallah Killed?
Israeli Defence Forces on Saturday, a day after missiles turned Beirut into rubbles, claimed that Hassan Nasrallah was dead.
"Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorize the world," the IDF posted on X in a single-line confirmation of the killing of the supreme commander of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah.
