In a landmark address to the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana, Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the enduring ties between India and Ghana, invoking themes of democracy, unity, and shared destiny. His speech, delivered in Accra, marked a significant moment in India’s engagement with Africa and the Global South.

PM Modi began his address by expressing deep gratitude for the warm welcome extended by the Ghanaian people. “I am deeply honoured to address this esteemed house today. It is a privilege to be in Ghana, a land that radiates the spirit of democracy,” he said, drawing applause from lawmakers. As a representative of the world’s largest democracy, he brought with him “the goodwill and greetings of 1.4 billion Indians.”

Modi Pays Tribute To Ghana’s Founding Father Nkrumah

Modi paid tribute to Ghana’s founding father, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, laying a wreath at his memorial earlier in the day. Quoting Nkrumah, he said, “The forces that unite us are greater than the superimposed influences that keep us apart.” Modi emphasised that these words continue to inspire the shared democratic journey of India and Ghana, both young nations forged through struggle and committed to people-centric governance.

The Prime Minister also reflected on a moving personal moment: receiving Ghana’s national award from President John Mahama. “It was a deeply moving experience. On behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India, I thank the people of Ghana for this honour,” he said.

In his address, PM Modi celebrated Ghana as the “Land of Gold,” not just for its natural resources but for “the warmth and strength in your heart.” He described India as the “Mother of Democracy,” where democracy is not just a political structure but a way of life. “India has over 2,500 political parties, 22 official languages, and thousands of dialects,” he noted, underlining India’s pluralistic spirit. “This is also the reason that people who came to India have always been welcomed with open hearts.”

PM Modi further drew a parallel between India and Ghana’s shared colonial past and enduring spirit. “The histories of India and Ghana bear the scars of colonial rule, but our spirits have always remained free and fearless,” Modi said, emphasising the resilience and strength rooted in both nations’ heritage.

Highlighting the warm bilateral ties, he added with a touch of affection, “Our friendship is sweeter than your famous Sugar Loaf Pineapple,” eliciting applause from lawmakers.
