Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim highlighted the warmth of India–Malaysia ties as they travelled together in the same vehicle to a major Indian diaspora programme in Kuala Lumpur during PM Modi’s official visit on Friday.

Sharing images from the journey on X, PM Modi said the moment symbolised the strong cultural and social bonds between the two nations. “The two leaders celebrating the India–Malaysia people-to-people connect! PM Anwar Ibrahim and I are heading to the community programme in Kuala Lumpur,” he wrote.

Grand Welcome For PM Modi In Kuala Lumpur

Earlier, PM Modi thanked Anwar Ibrahim for the warm reception at the airport, describing him as a friend and expressing optimism about further strengthening bilateral relations. The community reception, titled ‘Selamat Datang Modi Ji’, is expected to draw thousands from the Indian diaspora, one of the largest overseas Indian communities globally.

This is PM Modi’s first visit to Malaysia since India–Malaysia relations were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in August 2024. In his departure statement, the Prime Minister said the historic relationship had made steady progress in recent years.

Focus On Defence, Economy and Innovation

PM Modi said discussions with Anwar Ibrahim would aim to deepen defence and security cooperation, enhance economic and innovation partnerships, and expand collaboration into new areas of mutual interest.

Highlighting the nearly three-million-strong Indian community in Malaysia, PM Modi called the diaspora a “living bridge” between the two nations, praising its contribution to Malaysia’s development and its role in strengthening bilateral friendship.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the visit will include bilateral meetings between the two leaders, interactions with business leaders, and engagements with Indian community members, aimed at further cementing the India–Malaysia partnership.
