India-Pakistan UN debate: India launched a strong counterattack against Pakistan at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Tuesday, accusing Islamabad of hypocrisy and systematic human rights violations. Speaking at the Open Debate on Women, Peace and Security, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, said Pakistan “bombs its own people” and engages in “systematic genocide” while attempting to mislead the world with propaganda.
“Every year, we are unfortunately fated to listen to the delusional tirade of Pakistan against my country, especially on Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian territory they covet,” Harish said. “A country that bombs its own people, conducts systematic genocide, can only attempt to distract the world with misdirection and hyperbole,” he added.
India Calls Out Pakistan’s Past Atrocities
In a direct reference to Pakistan’s bloody history, Ambassador Harish recalled the atrocities committed during Operation Searchlight in 1971, a brutal military campaign against the Bengali population in then East Pakistan, now Bangladesh.
“This is a country that conducted Operation Searchlight in 1971 and sanctioned a systematic campaign of genocidal mass rape of 400,000 of its own women citizens,” he said. “The world sees through Pakistan’s propaganda,” the envoy stated firmly.
Operation Searchlight resulted in the killing of hundreds of thousands of civilians and widespread sexual violence. The atrocities triggered the 1971 Liberation War, leading to the creation of Bangladesh after India’s intervention.
The sharp remarks from India came after Saima Saleem, Counsellor at Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the UN, alleged that Kashmiri women had faced “decades of sexual violence” under Indian administration. Saleem cited reports by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch and demanded that future UN reports reflect the “plight” of Kashmiri women. India dismissed the claims as fabricated, saying Pakistan’s attempt to misuse global platforms for false propaganda only exposes its own hypocrisy.

India’s Firm Stand On Jammu And Kashmir
Reiterating India’s long-standing position, Harish said Jammu and Kashmir “was, is, and shall forever remain an integral part of India.” The envoy highlighted India’s record on the Women, Peace and Security agenda, calling it “unblemished and unscathed.”

Last week, too, India had hit out at Pakistan during the Human Rights Council in Geneva. Indian representative KS Mohammed Hussain said, “It is deeply ironic that a country with one of the world’s worst human rights records seeks to lecture others. Instead of making baseless propaganda, they should confront the rampant state-sponsored persecution and discrimination that plague their own society.”
The UNSC debate marked 25 years of Resolution 1325, adopted in 2000, which underscores the disproportionate impact of armed conflicts on women and stresses the need to protect women’s rights during war.
India reaffirmed its commitment to the resolution and emphasized that peace and security cannot be achieved by ignoring state-sponsored terrorism and violence against women in conflict zones.
