India-US Ties: Amid the ongoing energy crisis due to the renewal of tensions between the US and Iran, India is likely to face another challenge. Earlier on Friday, four US senators confirmed that they have reached an agreement with the Trump administration to push forward legislation ensuring sanctions on the nations that continue to buy Russian oil. In their announcement, senators stated that the law has been proposed to increase pressure on Russia by imposing sanctions on its allies.
In their joint statement, Republican senators Lindsey Graham and Roger Wicker, along with two other Democratic senators, Richard Blumenthal and Jeanne Shaheen, stated that they have reached an agreement with the administration to advance the proposed legislation. While defining it as significant progress, the Senate asserted that the legislation is expected to be rolled out soon.
"We are proud to announce that we have reached an agreement with the Trump Administration to move our updated Russia sanctions legislation forward. We are very pleased with this significant progress and expect to roll out the legislation very soon," the senators stated.
Sanctioning Russia Act Of 2025
The Sanctioning Russia Act of 2025 proposes American tariffs on goods and services exports from nations that purchase oil and natural gas from Russia. As per the bill, a whopping 500 per cent US tariff would be imposed on such countries, defined by Senator Blumenthal as "bone-crushing". However, the bill also allows the US president to provide a waiver of 180 days to those countries if it is in the national security interest of Washington.
Will It Affect India?
India has been one of the largest buyers of the Russian oil since 2022 and has been criticized by the Trump administration on numerous occasions. "To China and India: if you continue to prop up Putin’s war machine, you’ll have nobody to blame but yourself," Senator Graham stated in a post on X in June 2025.
