A shocking video showing an Indian student being forcefully restrained and handcuffed by US officials at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey has gone viral, triggering widespread outrage on social media. The student, whose identity remains undisclosed, was reportedly being deported when the incident occurred.
The viral footage shows at least four officers surrounding the student, with two pressing their knees on his back while others restrain his limbs. The student can be heard crying and pleading, creating a disturbing scene that has drawn condemnation from NRIs and human rights advocates.
Eyewitness Recounts Incident
The video was shared by a user named Jain on the social media platform X, who wrote, "I witnessed a young Indian student being deported from Newark Airport last night, handcuffed, crying, treated like a criminal. He came chasing dreams, not causing harm. As an NRI, I felt helpless and heartbroken. This is a human tragedy."
Jain further appealed to the Indian Embassy in the United States to investigate the matter and extend support to the student. Speaking to NDTV, Jain recalled that the student appeared disoriented and was speaking in Haryanvi, a regional Indian language. “The police didn’t understand him and refused to let me help interpret,” he said.
According to Jain, the student had already boarded the flight but was later deemed unfit to travel by the pilot. This led to a call for more officers, who forcefully removed the student and pinned him to the floor in full view of other passengers.
Indian Consulate Responds To Public Outcry
Responding to the public outcry, the Indian Consulate in New York issued a statement acknowledging the incident and confirming its engagement with US authorities. “We have come across social media posts claiming that an Indian national faced difficulties at Newark Liberty International Airport. We are in touch with local authorities in this regard. The Consulate remains ever committed to the welfare of Indian nationals,” it said.

Jain speculated that the student’s visa might have been denied at the port of entry, but questioned the need for such aggressive treatment. “His dignity was stripped away in public view,” he said.
The US Embassy in India issued a statement on X earlier today, reiterating its immigration policy. “The United States continues to welcome legitimate travellers to our country.
