Indian-origin US Congressman Shri Thanedar has taken aim at Vice President JD Vance after the Republican leader’s controversial remarks on immigration sparked a political and cultural backlash across the United States and India. The controversy stems from Vance’s repeated criticism of immigration, most recently his declaration that “mass migration is theft of the American Dream.”
The statement, posted on X on December 7, ignited intense debate, particularly in Indian media, where critics highlighted what they see as a contradiction between Vance’s hardline stance and his marriage to Usha Vance, the daughter of Indian immigrants.
Thanedar Shares Thanksgiving Family Photo
Thanedar escalated the row by sharing a family photograph of Usha Vance’s relatives celebrating Thanksgiving in 2024. The picture, which showed around 20 people of colour along with Vance, was captioned by Thanedar with the remark: “By your own logic, your wife’s entire family is ‘stealing the American dream.’”

The post quickly went viral, drawing sharp reactions from conservative commentators and members of the MAGA base, who accused Thanedar of politicising a private family moment.
Vance Doubles Down On Hardline Immigration Stance
Vance’s remarks have been part of a wider campaign against current US immigration policies. In his social media post, he argued that research suggesting immigration benefits the US economy is driven by those “getting rich off the old system.”
He has made similar comments during a New York Post podcast, where he said it was natural for communities to live among neighbours who share the same culture and language. He added that Americans should not be “forced” to adapt to different languages and doubled down on his view that English should be the country’s only common language.
Vance and his supporters have blamed the Biden administration for what they describe as a broken immigration system that has “promoted division” and weakened national cohesion.
Mass migration is theft of the American Dream. It has always been this way, and every position paper, think tank piece, and econometric study suggesting otherwise is paid for by the people getting rich off of the old system. https://t.co/O4sv8oxPVO

The latest comments were made in response to a video shared by a Louisiana-based construction company owner, who claimed that recent operations by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement had transformed the local labour market. The businessman stated that “no immigrants want to go to work” and that he had received more job inquiries in a week than he had in the previous three months.
Vance reposted the video and reinforced his message, writing that mass migration had long undermined American workers and that policy studies defending immigration were influenced by vested economic interests.
