Several large tech companies, including Meta, Amazon and LinkedIn, have cut thousands of jobs in recent months. Many firms are reducing costs and shifting focus toward artificial intelligence (AI).

For Indian workers, the impact can be much bigger than unemployment. A large number of Indians in the US work on H-1B visas. These visas are tied to employers, which means if someone loses their job, they usually get only 60 days to find another employer who can sponsor them. If they fail, they may have to leave the country.

This situation creates huge pressure on workers and their families. Many Indians have spent years waiting for green cards. Some have children studying in US schools, while others are paying home loans. A sudden layoff can turn life upside down within weeks.
To avoid leaving immediately, some laid-off workers are trying to switch to B-2 visitor visas so they can stay longer and continue job hunting. However, reports suggest immigration authorities are becoming stricter and asking for more documents before approving such requests.

The numbers are also worrying. According to Layoffs.fyi, more than 1,10,000 tech employees have lost jobs this year. Since Indians make up the largest group of H-1B visa holders, many are likely among those affected.
Another concern is AI. Tech companies are investing heavily in AI tools and reducing some regular roles. This has created fear that fewer jobs may be available in the future, making recovery harder for laid-off workers.
