Meta Platforms has laid off around 8,000 employees globally in its latest round of job cuts, accounting for nearly a tenth of its workforce. The company had initially instructed staff in multiple regions, including the US and Britain, to work from home before the layoffs were announced, with reports indicating that the layoff emails were sent from Singapore.

As per Bloomberg the first emails were received by Singapore employees at around 4 am local time. The emails were sent as per different time zones.

What’s Behind The Layoffs?

Before the restructuring, Meta employed around 78,000 people globally. Alongside the layoffs, the company is also reshuffling its workforce, with thousands of employees being transferred to newly created AI-focused teams. In an internal memo, Chief People Officer Janelle Gale said around 6,000 positions were eliminated and management structures streamlined.

"We're now at the stage where many orgs can operate with a flatter structure with smaller teams of pods/cohorts that can move faster and with more ownership," Gale stated.

Which Teams Are The Worst Hit?

As per reports, Meta is expected to carry out more layoffs later in the year. During the current layoffs, engineering and product teams are likely the hardest hit.

Meta Shifts Focus To AI

The layoffs come as Meta ramps up spending on artificial intelligence in an effort to compete with rivals like OpenAI and Google. The company expects capital expenditures to reach between USD 115 billion and USD 135 billion this year, nearly double last year’s USD 72 billion, with a significant portion directed toward AI infrastructure. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made it clear that AI is now the company’s top priority, leaving roles not aligned with this focus increasingly vulnerable.

US employees affected by the layoffs will receive 16 weeks of base pay, plus an additional two weeks for every year of service, along with 18 months of COBRA health coverage.
