India and Japan have announced plans to introduce the cutting-edge Shinkansen Alfa-X, also known as the E10, simultaneously in both countries in 2029-30. This marks a significant milestone in the partnership between the two nations, initially set to bring the Shinkansen E5 to India for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor. The transition to the advanced E10 highlights a leap forward in high-speed rail technology.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, a flagship project in India-Japan collaboration, aims to reduce travel time between the two cities to just over two hours. This corridor is significantly funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) through a 50-year loan at an exceptionally low annual interest rate of 0.1 per cent.
The E10 Shinkansen represents the latest in high-speed rail technology, with enhanced safety and faster speeds compared to its predecessor. Notably, Japan is tailoring the E10 to suit Indian conditions, including adjustments for extreme temperatures, dust resistance, and increased luggage space.
Progress in Infrastructure Development
India’s bullet train project is progressing rapidly, with track-laying expected to be completed by 2026-27. Initially, trains manufactured domestically will be deployed. The Integral Coach Factory of Indian Railways has awarded a contract worth Rs 867 crore to Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) for the production of two semi-high-speed trains. These trains, capable of running at speeds of up to 280 km/h, will operate at a practical speed of 249 km/h and are expected to be delivered by 2026.

Global Attention on Shinkansen E10
The Shinkansen E10, which is also being considered by countries like Taiwan and the United States, showcases Japan’s expertise in high-speed rail technology. Its simultaneous launch in Japan and India further highlights the strength of their bilateral ties and their shared vision for technological advancement.
Strengthening India-Japan Collaboration
The introduction of the Shinkansen E10 is a testament to the deep collaboration between India and Japan. Beyond the financial support for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor, Japan’s involvement in adapting the E10 to local conditions reflects a commitment to ensuring the success of the project.
As the E10 prepares to revolutionise rail travel in India, the project stands as a symbol of innovation and international cooperation, setting a benchmark for future high-speed rail projects worldwide.
