A video of the daughter of one of Iran’s top officials, Ali Shamkhani, wearing a strapless wedding gown has ignited widespread outrage, exposing what critics call the hypocrisy of the country’s ruling elite. The footage, which surfaced on social media platform X on October 17, shows Shamkhani walking his daughter, Fatemeh, down the aisle during her 2024 wedding ceremony at the luxurious Espinas Palace Hotel in Tehran.

In the video, the bride is seen wearing a strapless white dress with a low neckline and a sheer veil, a style considered highly immodest under Iran’s strict Islamic laws. Guests can be heard cheering as the father escorts his daughter into the lavishly decorated hall. The sight of the Western-style ceremony has sparked outrage on Iranian social media, where many users condemned the apparent double standards between Iran’s powerful elite and ordinary citizens.

Who Is Ali Shamkhani?

Ali Shamkhani, a senior adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and former secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, has long been a central figure in enforcing the country’s hijab and modesty laws. He played a major role in the brutal suppression of the 2022 nationwide protests that erupted after the death of MahsaAmini, a young woman detained for allegedly violating Iran’s dress code.

During those demonstrations, hundreds of women were beaten, detained, or killed for defying compulsory hijab rules. Shamkhani, once hailed as a hardliner enforcing “Islamic values,” is now being accused of blatant hypocrisy for allowing his daughter a freedom denied to millions of Iranian women.

Activists Call Out Regime’s 'Double Standards'

Exiled Iranian activist Masih Alinejad condemned the wedding video, calling it “a grotesque display of hypocrisy.” She noted that while ordinary Iranian women are jailed or attacked for letting a strand of hair show, Shamkhani’s daughter was free to wear a revealing gown without consequence. “This is the regime’s real face, preaching modesty to the public while their own families enjoy complete freedom,” Alinejad wrote on X.

Swedish-Iranian lawmaker Alireza Akhondi denounced the event as a “symbol of corruption and privilege,” arguing that Fatemeh Shamkhani’s freedom to wear what she wished stemmed not from religion but from her father’s political power.
