After the flaked-off Islamabad peace talks last week, which were reportedly called off by US President Donald Trump, new diplomatic developments suggest that backchannel efforts are quietly underway between Washington and Tehran to break the ongoing deadlock.
According to a report by Axios, citing a US official and two other sources, Iran has submitted a new proposal to the United States aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and bringing an end to the ongoing conflict. Tehran has also suggested deferring nuclear negotiations to a later stage.
Meanwhile, the US president is expected to convene a Situation Room meeting on Monday with his top national security and foreign policy advisers to assess the evolving situation.
Here are the key updates on the US-Iran peace talks:
- US President Donald Trump said a shooting incident at a Washington media dinner would not distract him from the Iran conflict. “It’s not going to deter me from winning the war in Iran. I don’t know if that had anything to do with it; I really don’t think so, based on what we know," Trump added.
- Trump also stated on Sunday that the American delegation will not travel for ceasefire negotiations and that Iran can reach out to Washington if it wishes to talk. Taking a firm stance, he added that future discussions would take place over phone calls rather than in-person meetings. During an interview on Fox News' The Sunday Briefing, Trump said, "If they wanna talk, they can come to us, or they can call us. We are not sending people to travel 18 hours to meet."
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is reportedly travelling to Russia to discuss the status of talks with the United States, according to state media. Earlier, Araghchi had met key mediators in Pakistan and Oman over the weekend. He also questioned Washington’s intent, saying it was unclear whether the US is “truly serious about diplomacy” after Trump cancelled his envoys’ Pakistan visit.

- Last week, Trump directed his envoys not to travel to Pakistan for talks with Iranian officials aimed at ending the war. “There is tremendous infighting and confusion within their ‘leadership.’ Nobody knows who is in charge, including them," he said, while clarifying that the move did not signal a resumption of the conflict.
