After the United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling a truce in the Gaza conflict, Iran on Saturday issued a dire warning, threatening an "uncontrollable explosion" of events in the Middle East.
The Islamic Republic's top diplomat, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, also appealed for the quick opening of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt so that humanitarian relief air could be delivered to the Gaza Strip.
"As long as America supports the crimes of the Zionist regime (Israel) and the continuation of the war... there is a possibility of an uncontrollable explosion in the situation of the region," Amir-Abdollahian told UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a phone call, according to a foreign ministry statement, news agency AFP reported.
The Iranian foreign minister praised the UN chief Antonio Guterres' decision to use Article 99 of the UN Charter as a "brave action to maintain international peace and security". However, Israel's Foreign Minister Eli Cohen condemned it and accused the UN chief of standing with Palestinian terror group Hamas.
