The Iranian government has taken a significant and landmark decision regarding women's rights. According to local media reports, Iranian women have now been legally permitted to ride motorcycles.

While Iranian law did not explicitly prohibit women from riding motorcycles or scooters, the administration had historically refused to issue them licenses. Under the new regulations, authorities have finally been authorised to grant licenses to female applicants.

Under the new regulations, traffic police have been instructed to train women to ride motorcycles. Following this, a police-supervised exam will be conducted. Women who pass the exam will be granted a proper motorcycle driving license.

Cabinet Approval And Legal Clarity

According to the Iranian news agency ILNA, Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref signed a proposal on Tuesday aimed at clarifying the traffic code. This proposal had received approval from the Iranian Cabinet in late January. The move effectively ends years of legal ambiguity surrounding women operating two-wheeled vehicles.

Impact On Road Safety And Liability

Previously, the lack of licensing created severe complications for women. If a woman was injured in a road accident, she was often held liable or found at fault simply because she did not possess a valid license. The government's new decision is expected to resolve these legal and insurance-related hurdles.

According to ILNA, the new resolution makes it mandatory for the traffic police to "provide practical training to female applicants, conduct examinations under direct police supervision, and issue motorcycle operator licenses to women."
