The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) on Wednesday said its artillery units were striking targets across Israel's northern border with Lebanon in response to "a number of launches toward Israeli territory". The Israeli military further said its armoured units had targeted Hezbollah observation posts situated in Lebanon.

"In response to a number of launches toward Israeli territory, IDF artillery is currently striking the sources of the fire in Lebanon. Additionally, IDF tanks struck a Hezbollah observation post in Lebanon," the IDF posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

This comes amid the raging armed conflict between Israeli forces and Hezbollah's Palestinian ally Hamas in the Gaza Strip. There has been an escalation in border skirmishes between Israel and Lebanon since Hamas' October 7 onslaught in Israeli territory, which led to the fighting currently underway between the Palestinian militant outfit and the IDF in Gaza.

Israel's recent border clashes with Lebanon has sparked concerns of a spillover of the conflict in Gaza, a scenario in which Israeli forces would find themselves involved in hostilities on multiple fronts. On Monday, Israeli strikes killed two people in south Lebanon, according to a first-responder organisation affiliated to the Hezbollah-allied Amal Movement, Reuters reported.

In Israel, a Hezbollah missile attack on Sunday wounded several workers from the Israel Electric Company and one died of his wounds on Monday, the firm said. Hezbollah is a Lebanese Shia militant and political outfit, which has backing from Israel's arch enemy, Iran.
