Israel-Hamas War: After the US blocked a ceasefire proposal at the UN Security Council, Israel vowed to "press harder" in its war with Hamas. Many Gazans sought safety in bombed-out hospitals on Saturday after Israel's warning. According to relief organisations, Gaza is in danger of succumbing to famine and illness and is currently experiencing an "apocalyptic" humanitarian crisis.

In a video statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, as quoted by news agency AFP, "I very much appreciate the correct stance the US took" and vowed to "continue our just war to eliminate Hamas".

US Vetoes Gaza Ceasefire Bid At UN

A resolution on Gaza proposed by the UN Security Council that called for an immediate humanitarian truce between Israel and Hamas was vetoed by the US on Friday. Israel and the US opposed the ceasefire in Gaza because they thought it would only benefit the militant organisation Hamas. After Washington blocked a ceasefire proposal at the UN, a move was strongly condemned by the Palestinian Authority and Hamas, as well as humanitarian groups.

Following a US veto on the Gaza ceasefire, Iran issued a strict warning, threatening an "uncontrollable explosion" of the situation in the Middle East. Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Islamic Republic's top diplomat, also appealed for the immediate opening of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt so that humanitarian relief air could be delivered to the Gaza Strip.

"As long as America supports the crimes of the Zionist regime (Israel) and the continuation of the war... there is a possibility of an uncontrollable explosion in the situation of the region," Amir-Abdollahian said as quoted by AFP.

Israel-Hamas War

In an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, the militant group Hamas killed approximately 1,200 people, the majority of whom were civilians, and kidnapped around 240 more. In retaliation, Israel declared it would destroy Hamas and began a ground offensive in the Hamas-controlled Gaza region. Over 17,400 individuals were killed in the Palestinian territory by Israel's bombing, the health ministry in the Hamas-run Gaza stated.
