As many as 30 persons were reported dead in Ishikawa Prefecture on the Sea of Japan after a streak of earthquakes hit the region on Monday, news agency AP reported while citing local officials. The Japan Meteorological Office said over 155 earthquakes, including a 7.6-magnitude jolt, were witnessed in the area.    

The jolt, with a depth of 10 km occurred on the Noto Peninsula of Ishikawa prefecture around 4:10 pm, United States Geological Survey reported. Besides, Tsunami warnings were also sounded within 300 kilometres of the epicentre in Noto in Ishigawa after the earthquake. People in coastal areas were urged to leave and move to the top of buildings owing to an anticipated wave of up to five meters. These warnings were issued in the western coastal regions of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama prefectures, Reuters reported.

Russia and North Korea also issued tsunami warnings for some areas.

As per the news agency AFP, local met officials said over 21 earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.0 were recorded in Japan.

A plethora of videos have been making the rounds across social media platforms in this context, where buildings could be seen violently shaking. Moreover, adding to the woes,  a massive fire broke out in the central Japanese city of Wajima on Monday evening after the quake shook the area. Ove 100 shops and houses were gutted in the blaze, NHK World reported.

The office of Japan's Prime Minister issued the requisite instructions amid the pressing times. It asked the authorities to provide timely and accurate information to the people. It also asked the rescue teams to prioritise the safety of lives over anything else.n"Assess the state of affairs regarding damage as soon as possible. Spare no effort in our emergency disaster responses, including saving lives and rescuing disaster victims, with the Government working as one," it said.
