Justin Trudeau’s personal life has been at the centre of intense global attention ever since rumours of his romance with pop superstar Katy Perry began circulating earlier this year. What started as quiet whispers in July transformed into full-blown headlines by October 2025, when the pair finally confirmed their relationship. Now, Justin’s ex-wife, Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, has subtly addressed the frenzy surrounding the Prime Minister’s new relationship.

Sophie shared her thoughts during a candid conversation on Canadian businesswoman Arlene Dickinson’s podcast, where she reflected on navigating public life, co-parenting, and personal growth amid constant scrutiny. Although neither she nor the host explicitly mentioned Katy Perry’s name, the reference was unmistakable when Dickinson asked how she maintains calm under intense public glare.

‘Listen to the music, not the noise’

Sophie explained that over the years, she has learned to separate what truly matters from the overwhelming noise of public commentary. “I’ve learned to listen to the music, not the noise,” she said, emphasising that external chatter, rumours, and speculation can easily become emotional triggers.

“We’re human beings and things do affect us,” she acknowledged. “I’m very aware that a lot of public stuff out there can be triggers. But how you react to stuff is your decision. The woman I want to become through this is my decision.”

Glimpse Into Co-Parenting

Sophie and Justin, who share three children: Xavier (18), Ella-Grace (16), and Hadrien (11), finalised their separation in 2023 after 18 years of marriage. Despite their separate lives, she noted that they remain deeply committed to providing stability and unity for their children.

“We call each other up. We’ll text each other… We will really try to build cohesion so that the kids feel that cohesion,” Sophie said. “We have separate lives, but we have one family life, right?”

Sophie did not address her own relationship with Ottawa pediatric surgeon Dr. Marcos Bettolli, nor did she comment directly on Katy Perry. She focused on the power of choosing one’s response in public situations.

She reiterated that she tries not to let outside gossip disturb her: “We’re human beings and things do affect us, but I’ve learned to control my reactions.”
